ABOUT MADURAI

Madurai is a city in Tamil Nadu, India. It is the largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu and is located on the banks of River Vaigai. Madurai is also known as "Kallanai" or "Kallan". The city has been an important religious center since at least 650 CE. Madurai was ruled by the Pallava dynasty from whom it derives its name. It has been ruled by Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks and Thanjavur Nayaks during various periods of history. The city became part of British India after signing a treaty with Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in 1799, who ceded it to them at that time. The British named it Madurai after their then governor general of Madras Presidency and they built Fort St George here in 1751.
